My father is a gorgeous skier. This is a portrait of him from a black and white photograph taken in the 1960s — no helmet, no high-tech snowsuit, just grace on a mountain. I've had complicated feelings about learning to ski from him, but none of that complicates what this image is. The snow on the slope and the sky above it blur into the same energy, and if you look long enough you can almost hear the sound of a quick switchback — that particular hiss of edges catching. He is entirely in his element.
